Gangneung or Sokcho? How Travelers Actually Spend a Day on Korea's East Coast

Pick one town for each day. Gangneung and Sokcho are the two names that come up for a weekend on Korea's east coast, and travelers' logs show they are used as separate days: among the most frequent same-day partners of 16 stops in the two towns that have any, not one pair crosses from one town to the other. Choose Gangneung if you want to arrive by train and spend the day on beaches, cafés and a museum. Choose Sokcho if the mountains (Seoraksan) are the reason you are going, or if a seafood market and a short seaside walk are enough for the day.

The common mistake is to book a Gangneung-to-Sokcho weekend as if it were one trip. Two towns means two arrivals, two sets of check-in and checkout times and a bus in the middle of the day, and the days in the logs are built around one coastline at a time. The numbers below come from 11,520 logged domestic trips, 1,024 of them to Gangwon. The Gangwon region page has the full list of its most-visited places if you want the rest of the province.

Getting there: the difference that decides it for many people

Gangneung is the end of the Gangneung Line, so it is the only one of the two with a train from Seoul. As of late 2026 Sokcho has no rail link from Seoul; you go by express bus from Seoul Express Bus Terminal (Express Bus Terminal Station on subway lines 3, 7 and 9) or from Dong Seoul Terminal (Gangbyeon Station on line 2). Both terminals also serve Gangneung. Bus times change with traffic, so check the current timetable and book on the KOBUS site, which has an English version. If it will not load from your country, the Korea Tourism Organization lists Klook and Hanpass as alternatives for booking.

One practical point for Sokcho: the Tourist and Fishery Market is a 5-minute walk from the Sokcho Intercity Bus Terminal and a 15-minute walk from the Sokcho Express Bus Terminal, so a bus arrival puts you at the market's door. For Seoraksan, take city bus 7 or 7-1 from the Sokcho Intercity Bus Terminal to the Seoraksan Sogongwon Park stop.

A Gangneung day, as travelers logged it

"Rating" is the average of the travelers' own 1-to-5 scores and "Would return" is the share who answered 4 or 5 to "would you visit again". Average position runs from 0 for the first stop of the day to 1 for the last.

Anmok Beach58 (6%)1 h4.6289%0.58
ARTE Museum Valley Gangneung52 (5%)1 h 30 min4.6062%0.40

Gangneung's day is a coastline walk with stops. The beaches are visited together: Gangmun and Gyeongpo were paired on the same day 17 times, and the market with Anmok Beach 23 times and with Gangmun Beach 22 times. The ARTE Museum Valley is the one long stop (1 h 30 min, rated 4.60), and it comes early in the day (0.40), typically ahead of the beaches; it is also the stop to keep for a wet afternoon. The restaurants and cafés tell the same story: eight of them are tied to the Gangneung coast in the data, from soft-tofu lunches to gelato and coffee near the beach.

The five stops above add up to 4 h at the stops, and the rough order travelers follow is ARTE Museum Valley Gangneung, then Gyeongpo Beach, then Gangmun Beach, then Anmok Beach, then Gangneung Jungang Market.

A Sokcho day, as travelers logged it

StopTrips (share of Gangwon trips)Typical stayRating (1 to 5)Would returnAverage position in the day
Sokcho Tourist and Fishery Market122 (12%)1 h4.1872%0.67
Sokcho Beach86 (8%)1 h4.4382%0.50

Yeonggeumjeong Pavilion36 (4%)30 min4.5681%0.47
Deungdae Beach25 (2%)30 min4.3573%0.36

Sokcho's day is shorter and tighter: the market and the beach are one pairing (38 same-day pairings, the highest of any two stops in either town), and Sokcho Eye and Yeonggeumjeong are the usual add-ons (the Ferris wheel was paired with the beach 19 times, the pavilion with the market 16 times). The five stops add up to 3 h 30 min, and the rough order is Deungdae Beach, then Yeonggeumjeong Pavilion, then Sokcho Eye (Ferris wheel), then Sokcho Beach, then Sokcho Tourist and Fishery Market. Only two restaurants or cafés in the data are tied to Sokcho.

Seoraksan is a big reason to choose Sokcho, but a hike is not a stop in these numbers. Treat it as its own day and keep the market and the waterfront for the evening before or after.

The two towns do not share a day

Among the 16 stops with same-day partners in the data, none lists a stop in the other town among its most frequent same-day partners. Gangneung stops pair with Gangneung stops, and Sokcho stops with Sokcho stops. The one place that sits between them in the logs is Naksansa Temple in Yangyang County. It was visited on 29 trips, with a typical stay of 1 h, a rating of 4.72 and an average position of 0.32, which makes it an early stop. It pairs with Naksan Beach next to it rather than with either town.

If you want both towns, give each its own day and plan the move as half a day. That works better than trying to fit ten stops into one.

The two markets are close in the ratings (Sokcho 4.18, Gangneung 4.23), so the market is not what separates the towns. The beaches and the train are. To see how a day in either town fits together with stops from the rest of Gangwon, the day-course tool builds a course from places that travelers visited on the same day.

Quick answers

Can I do both in a weekend?

You can, but the logs suggest travelers rarely combine them in a day. Give Gangneung one day and Sokcho the other, and treat the move between them as a half-day.

Which is easier without a car?

Gangneung, because it has a train. Sokcho works too if you arrive by bus and spend the day around the market, which is a short walk from the terminals.

Which has more to do?

In the data, Gangneung: 12 sights against 6 for Sokcho, and eight restaurants and cafés against two. Sokcho's draw, Seoraksan, is outside this count.

Do the ratings favor one town?

Only for beaches. Gangneung's three most-visited beaches rate 4.54 to 4.62 and Sokcho Beach 4.43. The markets are within 0.05 points of each other.

Summary

  • One town per day. None of the 16 stops with same-day partners pairs with a stop in the other town.
  • Gangneung for the train, the beaches, the cafés and a museum: 4 h at its five most-visited stops.
  • Sokcho for Seoraksan and a compact market-and-beach day: 3 h 30 min at its five most-visited stops.
  • Check the bus timetable before you book; the logs say how travelers spend the day, not when the buses run.
